Cassini compared to a school bus

Cassini spent 13 years at Saturn: it found the spray from Enceladus, flew between Saturn and its rings, and at the end dived into the planet.

Can you see it?

It no longer exists, so nothing will ever show it again; it is here for what it found.

How big is Cassini compared to a school bus?

Cassini is roughly half as long as a school bus.

How much mass does Cassini have compared to a school bus?

Cassini has roughly half the mass of a school bus.

Worth knowing about Cassini

Its size: 6.7 m tall and more than 4 m wide, with a 4 m dish antenna. Its mass: 5,712 kg at launch with its fuel and the Huygens probe; the orbiter itself, empty, 2,125 kg.

Why it stands out
Found jets of icy spray shooting out of Saturn’s small moon Enceladus (2005), and later that there is an ocean under its ice (2015). Carried the European Huygens probe, which landed on Titan on 14 January 2005. At the very end it flew 22 times through the gap between Saturn and its rings, then dived into Saturn on purpose, so that it could never crash onto Enceladus or Titan and bring germs from Earth with it.
The mission
A NASA, ESA and Italian Space Agency mission, launched on 15 October 1997. It reached Saturn on 1 July 2004 and studied the planet, its rings and its moons for thirteen years, powered by three radioisotope generators.

Where it sits

Nowhere any more: it dived into Saturn’s atmosphere on 15 September 2017.

How anyone knows this

We knew where it was because we tracked it until the day it ended.
