What is the Eagle Nebula?

Star-forming nebula famous for the Pillars of Creation, towering columns where new stars are born.

Worth knowing about the Eagle Nebula

You see the Eagle Nebula as it was about 5,500 years ago.

Why it stands out
Hubble’s 1995 Pillars image is one of the most famous astronomical photographs ever taken.
What it is
Glowing hydrogen around a young star cluster, whose hot stars light the gas and are slowly boiling away the dark pillars of dust inside it.
How we know: Infrared light from Webb pierces the dust to reveal young stars glowing inside the pillar tips at dense knots called EGGs (evaporating gaseous globules).

The numbers
Acrossabout 56 light-years
Distance from usabout 5,500 light-years
How big it looksabout 35 arcminutes — the full Moon is about 30

We use about 5,500 light-years, from Gaia (Maíz Apellániz et al. 2022). The 7,000 still widely quoted is an older estimate.
