What is the galactic bar and bulge?

Dense elongated bar of old stars at the galaxy’s centre, surrounded by a rounder bulge.

Worth knowing about the galactic bar and bulge

You see the galactic bar and bulge as it was 27,000 years ago.

Why it stands out
Gas funnelled inwards along the bar probably helps feed the black hole at the very centre, Sagittarius A*, over time; bars like ours are common in spiral galaxies.
What it is
A dense, elongated bar-shaped concentration of old stars at the galaxy’s centre, with a rounder bulge of stars around it.
How we know: The motions and clustering of gas and stars near the centre only make sense as an elongated bar, confirmed against other barred spiral galaxies seen face-on. Rung 6 of the cosmic ladder — the distance to other galaxies
The galactic bar and bulge — A model, seen from above the Milky Way’s disc: nobody has ever seen it from outside.
The numbers
The bulge, acrossabout 11,000 light-years
Distance from usthe centre of the bulge is 27,000 light-years away
How big it looks22 degrees — about 44 full Moons across

We use 27,000 light-years to its centre, the distance of the black hole there (GRAVITY Collaboration 2022). The 26,000 often quoted is older.
