ring galaxy

What is Hoag’s Object?

Near-perfect ring galaxy of unclear origin, a ring of blue stars around a separate yellow core.

Can you see it?

No small telescope will show you this one; it is here to be understood, not spotted.

Worth knowing about Hoag’s Object

Anything light from there tells us is news about 590 million years old.

Why it stands out
Nobody is fully certain how it formed; it lacks the signs of a collision that explain the Cartwheel Galaxy’s ring.
What it is
A dark gap separates the ring from the core.
Its name and its story
Discovered in 1950 by Arthur Hoag, who at first could not tell whether he had found a galaxy or a planetary nebula.

The numbers
Acrossabout 130,000 light-years
Distance from usabout 590 million light-years
How big it looksabout 45 arcseconds — the full Moon is about 1,800

We use about 590 million light-years: the time its light has been on the way, worked out from its redshift (NED, z = 0.0424) with the Planck 2018 values for the expanding universe; a faster expansion, as some measurements give, makes it about 7% less.
