1I/ʻOumuamua compared to Mount Etna

First confirmed interstellar object, small and strangely elongated; as it left, it slowed down less than gravity alone explains.

Can you see it?

No small telescope will show you this one; it is here to be understood, not spotted.

How big is 1I/ʻOumuamua compared to Mount Etna?

1I/ʻOumuamua is roughly 1/111 as wide as Mount Etna. That is for a width of about 316 m; its real size is only known to lie between 100 m and 1 km.

Worth knowing about 1I/ʻOumuamua

Why the size is uncertain: the brightness swung by 2.6 magnitudes, the largest ever seen on a small body, which fixes the shape at 6:1 or more — but the size follows only once you assume an albedo, and that was never measured. Published models run from a 115 × 111 × 19 m disc to a cigar about 950 m long.

Why it stands out
No visible tail like a comet, yet something pushed it outwards — a puzzle scientists still debate.
1I/ʻOumuamua — No spacecraft has been there, so nobody knows what its surface looks like. What you see is only what has been measured of it: its size, and its shape and colour where anyone knows them.
