RR Lyrae variable · the star the whole class is named after

RR Lyrae compared to the Sun

An old star that pulses in 13.6 hours — fast enough to watch it brighten or fade in a single night, and the prototype of a class used to measure distances.

How big is RR Lyrae compared to the Sun?

RR Lyrae is roughly five times as wide as the Sun.

How much mass does RR Lyrae have compared to the Sun?

RR Lyrae has roughly two thirds the mass of the Sun.

What is the volume of RR Lyrae compared to the Sun?

RR Lyrae has roughly 133 times the volume of the Sun.

How hot is RR Lyrae compared to the Sun?

RR Lyrae’s surface is 5,852 °C. The Sun’s surface is 5,499 °C.

Worth knowing about RR Lyrae

You see RR Lyrae as it was 818 years ago.

What it is
A star older than the Sun, with less mass but a larger size, which has run out of hydrogen in its core and become unstable: it swells, cools, shrinks, heats, and repeats, on a cycle of 13.6 hours.
How we know: That it pulses, and is not an eclipsing pair, shows in the shape of the change: a steep climb to brightest, then a long slow slide down, which no eclipse draws. Its colour alone could not tell: it is bluest just as it is brightest, but an eclipse can change a pair’s colour too, as Algol’s does.
It changes within one night
Period 13.6 hours; visual magnitude runs about 7.06 to 8.12.
It is a measuring stick too
RR Lyrae stars are horizontal-branch standard candles, absolute magnitude about +0.6 in V, used for distances to globular clusters and the galactic halo.
How we know: That they all shine alike was found the way Henrietta Leavitt found the Cepheid rule (the slower the beat, the brighter the star): measure a great many of them in one place, where they all sit at much the same distance, and see how their brightnesses compare. Rung 6 of the cosmic ladder — the distance to other galaxies
Its name and its story
Found in 1901 by Williamina Fleming at Harvard, who had first worked as a housekeeper for the observatory’s director and ended up cataloguing more than ten thousand stars. She worked in the same room as Henrietta Leavitt, whose Cepheid rule and Fleming’s star between them supply two of the rungs the universe is measured with.
