Vesta compared to Earth

Second-biggest object in the asteroid belt.

How big is Vesta compared to Mount Etna?

Vesta is roughly fifteen times as wide as Mount Etna.

How far away is Vesta from the Sun compared to Earth?

Vesta orbits on average about two and a third times as far from the Sun as Earth does.

How long is a year on Vesta compared to Earth?

Vesta takes about 3.6 Earth years to go once round the Sun. That is nearly the wait from one Olympic Games to the next.

How long is a day on Vesta compared to Earth?

Vesta turns round once in about 5.3 hours; Earth takes about 24 hours.

Worth knowing about Vesta

Why it stands out
To be a dwarf planet, an object has to be round from its own gravity (hydrostatic equilibrium). Vesta comes close, but a huge ancient impact near its south pole knocked off a chunk and left it slightly lumpy and egg-shaped — which is why Ceres counts as a dwarf planet and Vesta does not.
Its geology
Layered like a mini-planet (crust, mantle and an iron core about 220 km across) — often called a “protoplanet” because it almost became a real planet.
The machines we sent
NASA’s Dawn orbited Vesta 2011–2012 before moving on to Ceres.
