What is the Witch Head Nebula?

Faint reflection nebula lit by the nearby bright star Rigel, resembling a cackling witch’s profile.

Can you see it?

No small telescope will show you this one; it is here to be understood, not spotted.

Worth knowing about the Witch Head Nebula

Anything light from there tells us is news about 960 years old.

Why it stands out
Its light is spread so thin that even large amateur telescopes barely show it; it usually takes a long-exposure photograph.
What it is
A wispy cloud of dust that does not glow on its own but reflects the light of Rigel nearby: a “reflection nebula”.
How we know: Its spectrum matches Rigel’s spectrum almost exactly, rather than showing the glowing emission lines of a true emission nebula.
