Where is Saturn in the sky?

You can find this one with your own eyes.

How to find Saturn

A steady, pale yellow light, about as bright as the brightest stars, along the path the Sun and the Moon take across the sky. It moves so slowly that it stays in the same constellation for two years or more.

Your own sky, right now.

When can I see Saturn?

It moves against the stars, so there is no one season for it — when it is up depends on the date.

What the shading meansClose

This is the Earth. Where the globe is clear, this object climbs high in the sky; the darker the shading, the lower it stays; where the globe is black, it never rises at all. If the globe has no shading, it does not matter where on Earth you are.

Saturn month by month

The heights below are degrees above the horizon (a fist at arm’s length is about 10), seen from about 50° north — the middle of Europe. Which constellation it is in is the same wherever you are standing.

Saturn is at its closest on 18 October 2027 — up all night, and at its biggest and brightest of the year. Even then its ball is only about 19 arcseconds across, but the rings reach more than twice that — at 100× they look more than twice as wide as the full Moon does to the eye.

Heights marked in orange are under 10° — above the horizon, but down in the murk over the rooftops. You would need a clear, flat view that way.

What Saturn looks like in different instruments

With your own eyes

A calm golden “star” — the rings hide until you point a telescope at it.

Through a small telescope (a 150 mm Dobsonian)

The showstopper — a pale disc wrapped in its rings, still narrow in 2026 (tilted only about 7°) but opening year by year.
